What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 80 naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds found in the Cannabis plant. Cannabis is an umbrella term under which there are a number of species including Hemp and Marijuana. The cannabinoid compound THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most prevalent type found in Marijuana and is responsible for the ‘High’ or psychoactive response provided by its use. CBD (Cannabidiol) is the second most prevalent compound in Marijuana and the most common compound found in Hemp. CBD is none psychoactive and does not provide the ‘High’ associated with THC.

How Does CBD Work?

The Endocannabinoid system and its receptors are found throughout the human body. They are found most densely populating the brain and central nervous system but can also be found in all major organs, connective tissue, glands and the immune system.

The endocannabinoid system helps to regulate many essential functions in the human body including;

  • Sleep
  • Appetite, digestion, hunger
  • Mood
  • Motor control
  • Immune functions
  • Reproduction and fertility
  • Pleasure and reward
  • Pain
  • Memory
  • Temperature regulation

Endocannabinoids are essentially the messengers telling the body when to start processes and when to stop them. They help maintain the balance of the body and its systems in an optimal state.

CBD works by preventing the enzyme FAAH from breaking down Endocannabinoids meaning the bodies naturally produced cannabinoids are more numerous.

Is CBD Safe?

The short answer to that is yes, it is safe. However, there are a few possible side effects.

Studies have noted a possible decrease in activity of T and B cells in habitual users of CBD. This may increase the risk of contracting the HIV infection or worsen the disease progression. Tumours may grow and metastasis. It can also exacerbate asthma.

CBD may also cause slightly lower blood pressure, dizziness, dry mouth and lethargy. It can also decrease liver enzymes that are responsible for metabolising more than 60% of prescribed drugs.

These studies are still only declaring the side effects as ‘possible’ as many users were found to have high tolerance levels and could use as much as 1,500 mg a day with no side effects what so ever.

It is widely considered that the benefits of using CBD are far higher than the potential risk of side effects. So if you are considering using CBD oil to help you with an existing chronic illness, it is worth building your tolerance level up slowly to keep a check on any possible side effects.
